There’s no way you’d talk about aged universities and you won’t mention Oxford University. Its existence is almost close to a millennium. Its time of establishment is spanning to 928yrs. Obviously, regards have always been the home of this prestigious school.
There’s no university in any of the English-speaking countries that’s older than Oxford. It isn’t the oldest but very much impactful and hasn’t run obsolete even after several of its establishment. However, we want to discuss three universities older than oxford in India.
Thus, India has the calligraphy of ancient empires. Many have gone through extinctions while many are conserved as a foreign attractive centers to international visitors. And, those are what we’ll be showing you here at the moment.
Nagarjuna Vidyapeeth
This was established a very long time ago. History has it that it was established the 7th century AD and it flourished during the medieval time. However, In 1926, A. R. Saraswati was the first archaeologist to discover the Nagarjunakonda ruins.
And, ever since then, he’s been a prominent center for Buddhist in South India. Buddhist towns have also been uncovered here, revealing that Buddhist students from Kashmir, Gandhara, China, Sri Lanka, and Assam came here to study.
Vikramshila University
This was a university founded by King Dharmapala. In the monastery time, this university alongside Nalanda university are the major universities to compete head-to-head in those time. Odantapuri was in the scene then but wasn’t as popular these universities.
The five monasteries formed a network; "all of them were under state supervision" and there existed "a system of co-ordination among them.
It seems from the evidence that the different seats of Buddhist learning that functioned in eastern India under the Pāla were regarded together as forming a network, an interlinked group of institutions," and it was common for great scholars to move easily from position to position among them.
Nalanda University
This is a popular site to Buddhist even till date. However, it used to be one of the pride of India in the 1200 century AD. Nālandā university has subsequently established MoUs and collaborations with Peking University, University of Ostrava, Dongguk University, Deakin University, Otani University, Kanazawa University, City University of New York, Chulalongkorn University, ICWA, IIPHG, ASI, ICCR, ISEAS, IIAS and CSIR
